Kyoto

– Relaxing and melodic experience
– Tech behind it could be interesting in different game environments
– Great way to unwind for a few minutes

Cons:
– Game is over just as it begins to get interesting
– “Gameplay” is nearly nonexistant
– Is a developers experiment rather than a complete product

– Music and sound effects are masterfully done
– Most puzzles are unique and engaging
– Story that branches subtly from the beginning of the game

Cons:
– One cutscene is known to crash the game
– Some puzzles are a bit obtuse
– Even though the main character can’t read well, she can do complex math in her head

Erie

“Erie is a horror game set in 1966. You have been asked to investigate an incident at a power generator. There was some kind of meltdown, and you have to find out what exactly caused it, and save any survivors.”

Pick up the game here.

Pros:
– You get to play as Marvel’s “Flash” (apparently)
– Environments are well made and lend to an overall unsettling atmosphere
– Playing a graffiti artist in an evil lair is kind of a unique idea

Cons:
– Monster pathing is easily broken and manipulated
– Story hints are needlessly obscure and painful to read due to mechanics
– Entire experience vague and uninteresting

Saga of the Ugly 2

“SOTU 2 is a horror-platform-adventure game. It was made for the Scary 4 Digits competition over the course of a little less than a month by myself and orange08. Controls and goals are all explained in-game.”

– It’s free
– Takes about half an hour to complete in a single sitting

Cons:
– MS Paint level graphics
– Screen transfers require you to re-press movement keys
– Feels like a student project designed to test various ideas

Eyes – The Horror Game

“First person perspective indie horror game. If you like Slender, you’ll like it too. Search an old, abandoned house and collect any valuables but be careful – there are rumors of a ghost haunting the building.”

Pros:
– Being able to view the monster’s perspective is an interesting, if underutilized, concept
– The 3 floors felt distinct and were littered with small touches that gave them character
– Fantastic monster design

Cons:
– Extremely low replay value (Feels like a proof of concept)
– Monster vision is only useful after memorizing the level
– Small gameplay oddities may ruin the experience for some players
